The rich get richer, the poor get poorer. There is nothing new in this idea; it has been commented on for two millennia. But it was not until the principle was applied to education I understood that as a teacher, I was contributing to the cumulative disadvantage phenomenon both within my classroom, and in my leadership position within the school.

I will always be grateful to Geoff Barton for the role he played in lighting the spark of interest in this area that has rapidly grown into an obsession. Throughout these blog pages I plan to publish sections of my research, which starts with a look back over the history of our education system and ends with the results of my small scale investigation into how attainment gaps can be redressed within the classroom.

The research pages published so far can be found via the main menu.
